Using Panopto with Online Assessment

IMPORTANT NOTE: Panopto Student submissions CANNOT be used with Blackboard courses/modules which have been configured to use more than one Panopto folder – This is likely to result in students being unable to submit or recordings being stored against the wrong module run.

It is possible for your students to attach recordings from their Panopto My Folder to an assignment submission. They do this using a Panopto Video Student Video submission within the ‘Write Submission’ text editor which is available on the assignment submission screen.

We strongly recommend that before you decide to use Panopto for your Online Assessment, that you discuss it with your faculty Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) representative first.

If you decide that your students are to submit a recording from their Panopto My Folder, please provide them with clear instructions that this is what you require. Once the assignment has fed from ISIS, you can edit the standard instructions to change the submission format required.

Please make it clear to your students that adding the recording to Panopto and making a submission to the assignment, are two separate processes. Also make them aware of the following two important points:

Important note 1: It is essential that students allow ample time before the submission deadline to upload their media recording to Panopto and then make their submission. Depending on the size of the recording, Panopto will take some time to convert the recording before it is available to attach to their assignment submission.

Important note 2: Uploading or creating a recording in their My Folder area does not constitute a submission and instructors will not be able to access the recording. Students need to complete the assignment submission process.

Important note 3: If students are recording PowerPoint slides, it is recommended these are saved to and opened from their desktop. Not saving and opening from their desktop may result in their recording failing to upload.

Important note 4: Submissions MUST be made using the Panopto Video Student Video submission option from the add Content (+) button within the text editor. Using the Panopto Video option will result in no recording being added to the submission.

Important note 5: Edits to a student’s recording will need to have been made prior to submission for online assessment (if the student has already submitted, any edits will not be seen by you as the marker). If they wish to edit after submission they will need to resubmit to the assignment after the edits have been made.

IMPORTANT NOTE 6: Panopto Student submissions CANNOT be used with Blackboard courses/modules which have been configured to use more than one Panopto folder – This is likely to result in students being unable to submit or recordings being stored against the wrong module run.

IMPORTANT NOTE 7: We recommend using the Grade Centre to view and mark Panopto submissions rather than the Spreadsheet Marking tool. This is because the path to the recording is not fully formatted in the .txt file that Spreadsheet Marking provides. However, if you prefer to use the Spreadsheet Marking tool, you will still need to view the recordings via the Grade Centre.

We have guidance for students on these processes which you may point them to:
