Automated Recording frequently asked questions

What will I need to do if I have a session scheduled to automatically record?

During a lecture - Automated recordings will begin at the scheduled lecture start time and will finish recording 5 minutes before the scheduled end time, during this time period the recording light will be red to show that a recording is taking place (it will turn green when the recording has finished). Academics will not be required to make any manual intervention with the recording. If an academic wishes to use any of the recording controls such as pause, this can be done by via the computer system tray or by using the F9 key to pause and resume (the light will turn amber when paused, and red again when resumed).

Note: Panopto will still be recording even when paused. However, paused content will not be shown when the video is published.

After a lecture – For automated or manual recordings to be viewable to students via Blackboard a member of teaching staff will need to create a link to the module folder where all the recordings are held (recommended) or a link to the individual recording.

Note: Automated recordings will by default not be available (viewable) to students until 48 hours after the activity has taken place, allowing academics to edit the recording where required. After the 48 hour time period students will be able to see the recording via the Panopto cloud or Blackboard (if a link has been created).

How will I know when an automated recording has started? And what do the recording light colours mean?

When an automated recording starts the recording light on the lecture room podium will turn red.

Recording light colours

  • Green = NOT recording
  • Amber = Paused
  • Red = Recording
  • White = Problem with light

Can I pause a recording?

If an academic chooses to pause a recording this can be done via the computer system tray or by using the F9 key to pause and resume (the light will turn amber when paused, and red again when resumed).

Note: Panopto will still be recording even when paused. However, paused content will not be shown when the video is published.

Can I stop a recording?

If an academic needs to stop an automated recording in extreme circumstances this can be done by pressing the F10 key.

Note: Pressing the F10 key will end the Panopto recording and it will be uploaded to the Panopto cloud. After the F10 key has been pressed it is NOT possible to restart the automated recording.

What will I need to do after a session has automatically recorded

For automated or manual recordings to be viewable to students via Blackboard a member of teaching staff will need to create a link to the module folder where all the recordings are held (recommended) or a link to the individual recording.

Note: Automated recordings will by default not be available (viewable) to students until 48 hours after the activity has taken place, allowing academics time to edit the recording where required before student viewing. After the 48 hour time period students will be able to see the recording via the Panopto cloud or Blackboard (if a link has been created).

Can I publish the recording to students early?
