Overview of the External Examiner tool (UWE academics)

The External Examiner tool allows an academic to leave a note and files/packages for a particular module run to be viewed by the External Examiner.

The note is a free text field but could include information about any samples/files provided and any extra information about the module run that the External Examiner may find useful. This could also include links to other systems such as event capture.

The manual packages area within the External Examiner tool is an area where files and samples can be uploaded to be seen by the module External Examiner (including spreadsheet marking packages). Anything uploaded to the manual packages area will automatically be shown to the External Examiner in their Assessment Samples tab.

Once a package has been created, a member of the module teaching team can edit/add to or delete the package if required.

We suggest that the following documentation/files (if applicable) should be uploaded for the external examiner in the manual packages areas for each module run. The order should follow the list below to increase consistency for the examiner.

  • Module Handbook (either link to where this is stored in the Blackboard course using the note section or upload via the External Examiner tool using the manual packages functionality)
  • Assignment Brief (if separate to the handbook)
  • Assessment/marking criteria
  • Guidance for markers
  • Moderation report for the sample
  • Module Report (last year's or this year’s depending on cycle)
  • Copy of Student Feedback (module evaluation and any mid-module feedback)

Note: Where coursework samples are not available on Blackboard, please add a note in the tool advising the examiner where to find this.
