- Why am I seeing Late against my assignment submission when I submitted in the late submission window?
Since the introduction of the late submission window at UWE, students will not see a late flag against their receipt on the Coursework area for any submissions made after the due date/time but within the late submission window.
However, there are some areas of Blackboard which cannot be controlled by UWE. The Marks or My Marks area of Blackboard will display the word 'Late' where the submission was received after the due date/time. Please be assured that this is not an indication of any marks penalty.
- How do I know that I need to submit online?
You instructor will tell you if you must submit your coursework online through Blackboard.
In addition, notification of an upcoming online submission will be displayed in the following place (usually two weeks before the submission date):
- In the Coursework area in Blackboard
- Where do I find my coursework assignment?
Your assignment will be listed on the Coursework area in Blackboard, usually two weeks before the submission date.
Please see our Coursework area guidance for further information.
- What is the correct file format?
Your instructor will tell you what file format is required - usually it is Microsoft Office Word. The file format required should also be detailed in the assignment instructions.
It is your responsibility to submit coursework in a format your instructor accepts. Do not use the Submission or Comments text boxes unless your instructor tells you to do so. Your marks will suffer if your instructor cannot open or properly view your submission (for example, if you did not follow instructions on acceptable file formats).
If in doubt, check with your instructor.
Please note that Microsoft Office software is available at a discounted price for UWE students.
- Can I submit .pages files?
.pages files are produced from the iWorks application using Mac. You should only submit .pages files if you have explicitly been told to do so by your instructor.
If you been told to submit in Microsoft word format, in order that the file can be opened by the markers, you must export as *.docx using the File > Export function in iWorks.
- How do I attach my coursework?
Once you’ve accessed the assignment (see above), you need to scroll down the page until you see the ‘Browse’ buttons.
Please see our Submitting Assignments guidance for further information.
- I’m trying to submit but Blackboard isn’t doing anything
The time that your submission takes will depend on your internet connection and the size of the file you have attached.
Once you have pressed the ‘Submit’ button, please stay on the page i.e. don’t navigate away, and wait for the submission to complete.
If the process doesn’t complete after ten minutes or if you receive an error message, please contact the IT Service Desk on 0117 3283612 as soon as possible.
- How do I know that my coursework has been submitted successfully?
Please see our Checking your submission was successful guidance.
- How do I view my mark and feedback?
Once marked, your mark and any feedback provided will be displayed on the Coursework area in Blackboard.
Please see our Coursework area guidance for further information.
- What is the MarkingRecord.txt file for?
When your mark is released to you, a MarkingRecord.txt file is automatically included with your feedback files. This file is intended to provide you with a means to cross-reference the mark shown in Blackboard with the mark recorded at the time of marking. We recommend that you check that the mark shown in the MarkingRecord.txt corresponds with the mark shown in Blackboard and the ‘Unconfirmed Marks Published’ column in the Modules & Marks tab in myUWE.

- Are the marks shown in the Coursework area in Blackboard final?
No. All marks displayed through Blackboard are unconfirmed and before any penalties have been applied.
Your agreed marks for all assessments and modules will be available through myUWE once they have been confirmed by the Field Board.
- Why are my marks different in Blackboard and myUWE?
The marks in myUWE are the official marks as held in the University’s student records system. There are a number of reasons why there might be differences between marks in Blackboard and myUWE, such as the outcome of an assessment offence investigation or a missed assessment or exceptional removal of a mark application, moderation or other normal changes. If you believe there is an error, please contact your faculty Student Administration Team (SAT).
- Where can I get further advice on Assessment Policy?
Advice is available for issues such as assessment offences and non-submission, on the student Academic Advice Assessment web pages.
