Standard Submission and Grade Column Mapping

There are two processes for online summative assessment which facilitate the transfer marks from Blackboard to ISIS. These are Standard Blackboard Submission and Grade Column Mapping.

Standard Blackboard Submission is an end-to-end process which requires students to submit to an ISIS-generated assignment and marking is completed in Blackboard. The assignment can be setup for individual or group submission. Depending on the tool used to mark, the marks can be automatically extracted to ISIS at the end of the process.

Grade Column Mapping provides a mechanism to extract marks to ISIS where Standard Blackboard Submission is not suitable, such as traditional offline assessment methods, or where the module leader wishes to assess students using alternative online tools such as a blog or test. Assessments using Grade Column Mapping are created and managed, including marking anonymously, by the module leader manually. Samples for External Examiners are also provided by the module leader manually.

Pros and Cons of Blackboard Submission and Grade Column Mapping are summarised below:

Standard Blackboard Submission Grade Column Mapping
Pros Cons Pros Cons
Full end-to-end process with assignments automatically created in Blackboard courses Only supports one submission deadline per work item Supports wide range of assessments that cannot be supported by standard submission Anonymous marking managed by module leader manually
Students submit and receive marks and feedback in one location – the Blackboard Coursework tab Not suitable for large file size submissions Multiple deadlines can be supported, eg combine multiple deliverables due on different dates that contribute to the same work item External Examiner samples provided by the module leader manually

Assessments suitable for Standard Blackboard submission:

  • Use of Standard Blackboard Submission is mandatory in all cases except where the assessment cannot be supported. In these circumstances, Grade Column Mapping can be used.
  • Written assignments, eg. essay, report, reflective log, article, case study, project, lab report, or any assessments defined by length in words.
  • Presentations or practical exercises where something is submitted for staff or External Examiner scrutiny, eg the presentation, background material, or feedback and such a submission would qualify a student for a mark rather than NS.
  • Portfolios, where there is one submission deadline of multiple electronic files
  • Dissertations

Assessments suitable for Grade Column Mapping:

  • The assessment cannot be supported through Standard Blackboard Submission
  • Presentations or practical exercises, where students can only get a mark if they attend.
  • Portfolios, where there are multiple submissions with different deadlines.
  • Regular/repeated submission of individual items that contribute to a single, final mark for a work item. Each item can be a different type of assessment/deliverable
  • Physical Artefact
  • Submission through other Blackboard or UWE tools, for example wiki, blog or DEWIS test.
  • Exam or in Class Test
