Manually creating an assessment submission point

For exams that are to be submitted online, our recommendation is for the assessment work item to be set up as Grade Column Mapping in SIS. The Module Leader manually creates an assignment submission point with the relevant date and time restrictions, that students submit to. Manually created assignments have no direct connection with SIS - after marking is completed, use the Grade Column Mapping tool to send the marks to SIS.

  1. To create an assessment, you will need to select the + icon to add new content wherever you want the Assignment to appear.

  2. Choose Create from the dropdown menu.

  3. Select Assignment from the Course Content Items pane.

The Assignment Page – add a title, instructions and review settings

  1. Add a title
Add a title by editing the New Assignment text at the top of the page.
    • The title will appear in notifications and the gradebook and can be located using course Search so make sure it is meaningful and identifies the assignment.
    • The Blackboard course title will always appear with the assignment link in any notifications, such as in the Activity Stream or My Marks, so you do not need to repeat this in the Assignment title:

  2. Add Instructions - please see Standard UWE assignment instructions if you wish to copy these.
  3. Attach the exam / submission question using Browse Local Files and selecting the appropriate file.
  4. Set the due date and time – this is the date and time that students must submit by.
  5. Click on the right hand cog icon and set the following (making sure to save when you've finished):
    • Points Possible - ensure this is set to 100
    • Attempts allowed – change to unlimited attempts
    • Plagiarism Tools -click on the Enable SafeAssign
  6. Click on the hidden from students drop down list and select Release conditions
  7. Select Date/time and set the Access from and Access until dates/times to reflect the period of time you want the students to be able to submit. For most coursework submissions, the Access until date/time will be 48 hours after the due date. For most exam submissions, this date/time will be the same as the due date. Please note: the tool won't let you save an Access Until date that is exactly the same as the due date so please just add a minute to the time.
  8. Click Save and there will now be a new Show/Hide rule in the left hand side bar which controls when the assignment is visible to students.

If you do not want students to see the assessment name and availability dates before the Access From date/time, select the Hide option.

If you want students to see the assessment name and availability dates before the Access From date/time, leave set at Show - please note that students will only be able to access the assignment and view any attachments once the available from date/time has passed.

  9. Click on the x to go back to your assignment

Students who have been granted additional time or reasonable adjustment to deadline

If there are students who have been granted additional time to submit an exam or a reasonable adjustment to deadline for an assessment, the Module leader needs to create a separate assignment submission point and add release conditions so that only the relevant students can see and access it.

  1. Repeat steps 1 to 6 above to create the assignment - You should name the exam so that it is clear that this is the additional time/reasonable adjustment version.
  2. Click on the hidden from students drop down and select Release conditions
  3. Set the specific Access From and Access Until dates/times. The Access Until must be the same as the Due Date date and time.
  4. Select Specific members or groups

  5. From the individual members drop down list select who you want to access the assignment.
  6. Check the Date/time box, and add the Access from and Access until dates as required, making sure the Access until date and time is the same as the due date and time. Please note: the tool won't let you save an Access Until date that is exactly the same as the due date so please just add a minute to the time.
  7. Select Save.
  8. Only the students that you have added in the Release conditions will be able to see and access this assignment. However, they will still be able to see and access the original submission point so it is important that you explain to them that they need to use the correct one (tell them how you have labelled it).
  9. As this is a separate assignment, the submissions will be listed separately in the Gradebook.
