The Panopto capture application allows users to record audio, video, and entire screens or application windows without the need to download a recorder. The Capture recorder is opened directly from within a browser.
Note: Panopto Capture requires the latest version of Chrome, Edge (Chromium-based), or Firefox browsers on Windows 10, MacOS 10.15 or higher, or the latest ChromeOS. Safari is NOT currently supported. IPADS and IPhones are NOT supported.
Note: anti-virus exceptions may need to be made for audio (microphone), video (web camera), and screen in your preferred browser.
Note: Mac Users - Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to give additional permission for Chrome or Firefox to access your screen prior to recording a PowerPoint presentation. To learn more about this, please visit Why isn’t my screen being recorded on Mac when using Capture?
Quick Steps: Launching the Panopto Capture Recorder
- Log into the Panopto cloud
- Click the Create button.
- Click Panopto Capture
- The Panopto Capture recorder will open in a new browser tab
Making a recording
Once the Capture recorder is open a recording can be made.
Important points to note
- If you are sharing a PC please check the correct person is logged into the cloud before opening the Capture recorder (user shown top right of the cloud).
- If you are using a PowerPoint presentation, the file must be saved to the desktop. If you open a PowerPoint file from any other location on the PC, the recording may fail to upload.
- If you are Capturing a PowerPoint presentation you should capture the screen (not the PowerPoint application) – this allows the presentation mode to be recorded.
- Ensure you select the My Folder from the 'Folder' drop down list after recording
- We recommend that you retain the date and time information in your Session Name to help identify recordings.
- It is recommended that you test your Primary sources (video and audio) prior to the start of each recording (click on the audio and video buttons to check them).
- When you have stopped the recording wait until it is finished uploading and is safe to close the Browser (show top left of the screen)
- If you are creating your recording for an assessment you will need to submit this through the Panopto Student Video Submission option in Blackboard.
Quick Steps: Making a recording via the Capture recorder
- Open the capture recorder
- Select an audio source
- If required select a video source
- If required select a screen, application or tab to record
Note: PowerPoint is recorded in Panopto Capture by recording the screen with the PowerPoint slides in slideshow mode (capturing the application will not capture PowerPoint in presentation mode).
Note: Mac Users - Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to give additional permission for Chrome or Firefox to access your screen prior to recording a PowerPoint presentation. To learn more about this, please visit Why isn’t my screen being recorded on Mac when using Capture?
Note: Select the Application Window tab to record everything that happens in one application window only. Select the application and then click Share. Please note: After starting the recording, Panopto will record PowerPoint slides as a video stream when a presentation is put into slideshow mode. If you are a Firefox user, please see How to Record PowerPoint with Firefox and Capture.
- Click the record button
- Wait for the recording to upload
- Amend the recording title as required
- Ensure that the folder selected is the myFolder
- Close the browser
Note: If you are Capturing a PowerPoint presentation you should capture the screen (not the PowerPoint application) – this allows the presentation mode to be recorded.
The recording will now be accessible via the Panopto cloud.
Note: If you are creating your recording for an assessment you will need to submit this through the Panopto Student Video Submission option in Blackboard.
