Learning outcomes:

At the end of the module the successful student will be able to:

    1. establish initial social contact with Japanese people

    2. express preferences and approval;

    3. deal with simple and straightforward situations;

    4. understand and react to simple telephone messages, invitations, appointments etc.;

    5. read and write simple messages using hiragana and katakana and relating to personal profile and simple personal arrangements;

    6. begin to perceive the cultural diversity of the country of the language being studied;

    7. demonstrate that s/he has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake the study of the language at a subsequent level on the Programme.

Syllabus outline:

The module aims to introduce the absolute beginner to the structure of the language and to ensure an active ability to function at a basic level. This is achieved by using:

•specific course book materials for ab initio students;

•supporting audio and other materials to facilitate and reinforce grammatical and structural progression;

•simple reading material reinforcing structures and vocabulary taught in a specific cultural context;

•contextualised materials to ensure the progressive acquisition of active language skills.

Teaching and learning methods:

Whenever possible, structures and vocabulary will be taught in a communicative way and as much use as possible will be made of the target language. Approaches to teaching and learning will include:

•presentation and practice of structures and vocabulary;

•simulation and role play;

•group and pair work;

•reading comprehension;

•listening comprehension;

•audio laboratory work;

•guided writing;

•directed self-study.

Reading Strategy

All students will be encouraged to make full use of the print, multi-media and electronic resources available to them in the University Library. The University Library’s web pages provide access to subject relevant resources and services, and to the library catalogue.

Essential reading will be indicated clearly in the module handbook issued to all students at the beginning of the module, as well as on Blackboard. Students may be expected to purchase a set text/dictionary, be given or sold a print study pack/thematic dossier or be referred to texts that are available electronically.

If further reading is expected, this will be indicated clearly. If specific texts are listed, a clear indication will be given regarding how to access them and, if appropriate, students will be given guidance on how to identify relevant sources for themselves, e.g. through the use of bibliographical databases.

Course books to be used will be announced in the student guide issued to all students at the beginning of the module.
