By the end of the course students will be able to:

• assess the influence of modernity and globalisation to the development of European institutions (essay)

• demonstrate a thorough and deep knowledge of reasoning behind European policy decisions (essay and presentation)

• critically evaluate arguments for and against further European integration (essay)

• critically assess the role and future of Britain within a ‘wider’ and ‘deeper’ EU (essay and presentation).

• Demonstrate analytic and critical skills essential to the policy analysis of multigovernmental organisations (essay and presentation).

Syllabus outline

• Theories of European integration.

(neo-functionalism, intergovernmentalism, federalism, consociationalism)

• The European Policy Cycle and the formation of EU policies.

(Economic, Regional, CAP, CFSP)

• Regionalism and Multi-Level Governance in the EU.

Teaching & learning methods

Based on a weekly lecture introducing the major themes in each topic and a seminar in which students will have to take the role of presenter-discussant on a pre-determined academic paper, relevant to the themes investigated.
