Learning outcomes:
On satisfactory completion of this module the student will be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding
• Demonstrate a good standard of performance skills appropriate to young audiences
• Understand the different approaches required in performing to young audiences
Intellectual Skills
• Research and explore a range of possibilities in communicating a given role to a young audience on stage
• Communicate, discuss and engage with the artistic requirements and interpretation of the production as made explicit by the director.
Subject / Practical Skills
• Able to apply and enhance all basic performance skills gained in Level 1 modules in a wide variety of performance venues, communicating clearly with young audiences.
• Able to operate as a member of a company touring and presenting a minimum of two performances daily.
• Able to apply the self-management and self-discipline demanded by this field of employment.
• Able to undertake the daily setting of costumes, props, scenery and basic electrical equipment.
• The development of audition and self-presentation skills.
Transferable Skills
• Maintain concentration and performance focus in a variety of performance situations and locations.
• Able to work in a team on tour.
Syllabus outline:
The syllabus will normally cover: acting; mime; puppetry; music - reading, singing, playing; scenery - handling - get-in/fitup/strike/get-out/pack; scenery maintenance; care, use and maintenance of costumes; care, use and maintenance of props.
Teaching and learning methods:
Students will have the opportunity to learn through: rehearsals; workshops; group classes; performances normally over four weeks (2 per day) in schools, churches, halls and theatres; audition.
Reading Strategy
Students are encouraged to become familiar with the subject area, and texts specific to the module, through reading lists and reference material provided. Lists are updated annually to maintain currency and relevance. Each department holds texts and reference material, as well as the general access provided to the Schools library and access to the Internet. The specifically vocational nature of training and study, combined with the project based nature of learning on the course, may require that students are guided to reading and research material in the first instance by the module leader.
