Syllabus outline:
This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to further develop their own self initiated practice. Students will continue to manage a studio or work place of their own and further develop their work to a sophisticated level.
The emphasis in this module is the focusing individual working methods and the production of artworks as well as furthering their understanding of the cultural implications of their work. Students are also required to photographically document (and digitally, if appropriate) their work at a professional level.
Students will be expected to make significant contributions to critical discussion, group critiques and debates about their own and others artworks. Students will focus their inquiry and demonstrate a focused engagement with critical discourse and the exchange of ideas. This will be achieved through an examination of a wide range of sources, which are of particular relevance to individual students’ areas of interest. Students’ work and their management of their own studios or work place will be further developed during this module.
For assessment at the end of the module students are required to present finished artworks appropriately installed. Supporting work should also be in evidence for assessment. Documentation of work will also be assessed in the form of labelled 35mm slides (or appropriate equivalent) of other completed works.
Teaching and learning methods:
Much of the teaching and learning during this module will take place in the students’ studios or work place.
The emphasis of this module is upon self-directed work and students are expected to spend appropriate amounts of time working in their studios. Teaching and learning methods are aimed at supporting the student in managing their studio practice effectively. Students are expected to organise and contribute to a rotating programme of group critiques and discussions (in conjunction with the Programme Leader). These may involve invited visiting specialists and/or Fine Art staff.
A number of presentations will be given by students and invited visitors. Students are expected to make regular visits to art exhibitions and events in London, Bristol and elsewhere in order to maintain a wide and informed knowledge of contemporary art practice.
