UWE supports '200 ideas for Bristol'

Issue date: 10 February 2006

Postcard The University of the West of England (UWE) is offering £500 for the best student idea submitted to the – '200 ideas for Bristol' scheme which is part of the Brunel 200 celebrations .

Brunel 200 has called for ideas to make Bristol an even better place to live, work in and visit. The competition – 200 Ideas for Bristol – aims to use the spirit and vision of Brunel to inspire people inside and outside Bristol to propose new projects reflecting all aspects of work and life.

Andrew Kelly, Brunel 200 co-ordinator said, “Brunel was a man of ideas and Bristol is a city of ideas. Brunel built the modern world with his vision about opening up the world to new forms of transport. He also created beautiful projects. Everyone associated with Brunel 200 has been inspired by this vision. We want to see this turned into new ideas for Bristol from people in the city and outside.”

Professor Paul Gough from the Bristol School of Art, Media and Design is a champion of this scheme, he said, “We have been working closely with Professor Kelly on this project; it's a brilliant way of connecting so many themes - innovation, entrepreneurship, flair - without losing sight of the truly odd ideas that can sometimes emerge from 'wild conversations'. After all, who would have thought that Brunel was the designer of the first flat-pack buildings?”

Andrew Kelly continues, “Building on the exciting developments we have seen happen in our city during the past 15 years we want to build on this transformation. There is no limit on the number and type of ideas put forward.”

The call for ideas ends on 26 March 2006. In March some of the preliminary ideas submitted will be displayed at The Architecture Centre and the best ideas will feature in an exhibition in the centre in May 2006. Help will be given to the best idea with a £1,000 prize and advice on development and implementation. There will also be two school's prizes: £500 each to the school of the child who comes up with the best idea in the under 11 group and the over 11 group.
