UWE Bristol among universities to receive first ever Turing Network Development Awards

UWE Bristol has been named among the first ever successful applicants to The Alan Turing Institute’s Network Development Awards.
In all, the innovative awards have been made to 24 UK universities. UWE Bristol will receive £25,000 to support its work in artificial intelligence (AI).
Each successful university demonstrated its own particular proven research excellence and a track record of translation in data science, AI, or a related field. The award recipients will now benefit from active involvement with the Institute’s thriving network.
As the national institute for data science and AI, the Turing Institute already has a well-established network of university partners, and the awards will enable the Institute to extend its reach.
Adrian Smith, Institute Director, said: “The awards reflect the demand across a range of sectors to work with the Institute. Data science and AI doesn’t stand still, and so we look forward to working together with this network of universities; exploring new ways to grow the UK’s dynamic research and innovation landscape.”
Dr Matthew Studley, Associate Professor in Technology Ethics at UWE Bristol, said: “It’s clear that AI and data science are having a huge impact on our lives, and this trend will accelerate and deepen rapidly in the coming years.
“UWE Bristol researchers develop and apply these techniques in a wide variety of disciplines and projects already, and this award will increase our involvement with the Alan Turing Institute so we can have more impact both within the local region and beyond.
“With so much at stake, it’s important that more diverse communities drive and direct AI and data science to work for our collective benefit, and avoid the potential pitfalls.”
