UWE Bristol climbs up league table of world's best young universities

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has moved up at least 39 places in the 2021 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings. Ranked 112th this year out of 475 institutions across the globe, the University has moved up from the 151-200 category it was positioned in last year.

The THE Young University Rankings lists the world’s best institutions that were founded in the last 50 years. The rankings are based on the same methodology as the Times Higher World Rankings, with slight adjustments to reflect the profile and missions of young universities. The league table assesses universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Professor Steve West, UWE Bristol Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to have leapt up the rankings of the Young University Rankings and this is a tribute to our high quality of teaching, knowledge transfer activities and world-class research.

“It is also a testament to us being a truly global university that places a great emphasis on inclusiveness and is proud to receive students from all over the world. For the 20/21 academic year, we welcomed 2,800 international students, who made up almost a quarter of our total intake on our Bristol campuses.”

To determine the rankings, THE looked at performance indicators grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); industry income (knowledge transfer); and international outlook (staff, students and research).

UWE Bristol’s jump in the rankings was driven by its citation score, as well as international outlook. Compared to other Higher Education Institutions in the South West, the University saw the largest percentage growth in international student intake between the 2017/18 and 2019/20 academic years. An increase of 45% was higher than the average across the whole sector in that time period.
