UWE Bristol to open LFT (lateral flow test) testing centre for students

UWE Bristol’s Centre for Sport has been temporarily converted into a LFT (lateral flow test) testing centre for students, to support the Government and NHS Test and Trace scheme.

The Government is strongly encouraging students to undertake testing (ideally at least two tests 72 hours apart) before travelling home from university for the Christmas break. This is to keep them and their families, friends and home communities as safe as possible.

The sports hall in the Centre for Sport on Frenchay campus will become a testing hub for seven days. Over 90 staff and students have been recruited as registration assistants, test assistants and results recorders.

The centre will open on Monday 30 November to 6 December from 9am until 9pm every day.  Tests will only be available for students who do not have Covid-19 symptoms and participation is entirely voluntary.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve West said: “As a responsible University, we are keen to do everything we can to support the local, national and international effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and to help students who wish to return home for Christmas.

“Testing will help to break line of transmission amongst students especially when they are infected but are not aware of it.”

Students have been emailed a link to book a test. They will receive guidance on how to take the test, supported by trained on-site staff. The sample is processed on-site and the results are available shortly afterwards via text/email.

Professor Steve West added a message to students: “You might not have symptoms, but you could be carrying the virus meaning you are likely to spread it to others. By getting a free test before you travel home, you’ll be able to prevent spreading the virus to your loved ones.”

“We encourage you to book a test. Even if you test positive, you’ll have plenty of time to self-isolate in your student accommodation and travel home in time for the holidays. And we’ll be here to support you.”

He added: “It is important that even with the testing that you continue to follow the ‘Hands. Face. Space.’ protocols to continue to reduce risks over the holiday period, as the testing is only providing your status for a 24 hour window.”

Students can contact the Covid Support Team on 0117 32 87000 for support.
