Law student Amerjit Kaur came to the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in 2015 to study law. She approached UWE Bristol during clearing to make an enquiry but ended up joining the university to study towards an LLB just a few weeks later.

Amerjit speaks about her experience of UWE Bristol Clearing and how she feels about going to university as a mature student:

“I called the UWE Clearing Lines because I had been thinking about doing a law degree the following year. I had been studying with the Open University via distance learning for a number of years and my phone call was really very spur of the moment. I just wanted to find out what the next stage would be.

“The woman I spoke to was extremely helpful and she suggested that if I was interested I could actually start straight away as there were a few spaces available on the course that interested me.

“After a little bit of thought I decided actually 'why not?' The entire process took two days, I had to write a personal statement and gather together qualification documents but with a bit of focus this was easy to do. Looking back I didn't have that much time to think but it's really worked out well for me.

“I have now been at UWE Bristol for two years, the course is fantastic particularly as I have taken up the opportunity to work on a voluntary placement with Bristol Law Centre. This has given me an amazing insight into the difficulties their clients have, it gives me some real life experience and I feel quite privileged to be able to help people.

“The time at UWE Bristol has opened my eyes and widened my experience immeasurably and now I wish I had made the decision to go to university when I was younger. I also love how I have had the chance to make friends with people from around the world from Nigeria to Malaysia – it's been brilliant.

“Making that phone call two years ago has changed my life and my work prospects are looking good. I would encourage anyone thinking about taking the plunge to go for it. Study has helped me see a bigger picture, to be analytical and to become better at problem solving and I understand how I can use these skills to make a positive contribution when I graduate.”
