Final year students nominated for RTS Award Final

The Wall a film by a team of final year students at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and directed by Christy Tattershall, has been nominated for the final of the national Royal Television Society student film awards. The awards will be held at the British Film Institute, Southbank on Friday 16 June.

The Wall follows the lives of three ex-convicts from Bristol, UK. The men reveal what life is like both inside and outside of the prison walls, describing their pasts, the prison system, reform and their hopes for the future.

Christy Tattershall, Director, said, “It was a real honour to get to know the men featured in the film and to gain their trust. We were able to access things from their lives that they might not always get the chance to share with people. Ultimately, our aim was to give the men a voice, providing them with a platform to share their perspectives.”

The film was made as part of a second year university module on 'Documentary: Research and Production'. The team comprised of Alex Handschuh, producer; Edd Roberts, sound; Patrick Royall and Matt Pidala, camera and Christy Tattershall, editor and director.

Alistair Oldham, Senior Lecturer, said, "Congratulations to the undergraduate students involved for making such a strong and unflinching piece of documentary, and on such an important and topical subject.

“The filmmakers demonstrated great maturity, good teamwork, research and real technical skill to get the film made. They also developed a genuine and reciprocal respect from their subjects, to give a rare insight into the challenges these local men face upon leaving prison."

The national nomination follows on from the sweeping of the board at the regional awards held in February earlier this year.

The film is playing at the Doc/Player platform in the viewing lounge of the Sheffield Documentary Festival from 9 to 14 June. For details see https://sheffdocfest.com/view/aboutdocfest
