UWE Bristol partnership sets new precedent in delivering postgrad real estate course

Issue date: 05 April 2013

UWE Bristol has partnered up with the Royal Bank of Scotland Group and global real estate agent Jones Lang LaSalle to develop an MSc in Real Estate Investment and Finance. The programme, due to start in September 2013, will be unique amongst similar courses as it has been developed in conjunction with industry professionals and will be delivered in the same manner, giving students the opportunity to explore and critically evaluate, at an advanced level, key areas highlighted by industry leaders within the field of real estate investment and finance.

Christopher Mason, Senior Lecturer within UWE Bristol's Department of Construction and Property, explains, “The aim of the programme is to impart a practical and theoretical understanding of real estate investment and finance as well as valuation, appraisal, development and management to a level that allows students to examine, critically, current practice and apply contemporary theory and techniques to issues that face general practice surveyors. It seeks to equip postgraduate students with a programme of advanced study necessary to actively practise real estate.

“RBS and JLL have been instrumental in developing and designing the Real Estate Finance and Investment module and ensuring that it builds on and develops themes considered in the programme's other modules. Our partners will also actively engage in the delivery and teaching, including site visits and industry-orientated presentations.

“Whilst a small handful of other institutions offer similar courses, to the best of my knowledge, no other UK university offers such a programme where partners are instrumental in both the development and delivery.”

Philip Schmid, Associate Director at Jones Lang LaSalle, said, “The relationship between property and finance has always been a barometer of the economy and its recovery. Gaining a deep understanding of their connectivity has therefore never been more important. Such recognition has led UWE to forge relationships with RBS and Jones Lang LaSalle, two globally recognised leaders in their respective fields, to create an innovative degree course that will appeal to anyone looking to get into, or already, working in the property and financial sectors.

“The course has been designed to better prepare students for the workplace through greater recognition and understanding of why property is such an important asset class, the drivers behind property investment including finance and the use of live examples in the marketplace.”
