Helena Wildblood

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of our colleague, Helena Wildblood, on Sunday the 28 October 2012.

Helena was an excellent colleague, well known, loved and respected across the Faculty and beyond. She was highly professional, passionate, and a real loving 'mother' to many of our students.

Helena began her career as a teacher. She came to UWE in 1994 as an Associate Lecturer, brought in to provide teaching in the professional and transferable skills that all engineers need. Many cohorts of students and re-organisations of the University later, she had become an integral part of the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics.

Her work as Programme Leader for the Foundation Engineering and BSc Engineering programmes put her in contact with hundreds of students over the years, who really appreciated her personal touch. She treated them all as individuals, and always had the best interests of her students at heart. Her dedication to students included always responding with alacrity to their queries and concerns, and even attending music events they had organised as part of their course, often well into the early hours.

Helena's colleagues remember her as a feisty and determined colleague, who never accepted anything less than the highest standards. Despite many years working as an academic, Helena tackled each year with vigour, energy and enthusiasm, and gave full commitment to the students. Above all was her willingness to go that extra yard, that was commendable and a model to us all – both students and staff. She expected much of her students and colleagues, and it was often Helena's way or…….. But again, she treated her colleagues as individuals and always took the time to ask after our lives outside work. She could always be relied upon to help a colleague in need. We will all miss her.
