Varsity Boat Race

Boat crews from UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol go head to head on Saturday 12 May 2012 from 13:00 to 16:00 for an afternoon of racing at the eighteenth annual Boat Club Rowing Varsity.

A highlight in the sporting calendar for both universities, the Varsity Series is an exhilarating mix of tradition, rivalry and fun for both competitors and spectators. Attendance is free and large crowds are expected at the Bristol Harbourside to cheer on the two teams.

Since its inaugural race in 1995 the event has taken on a prestige of its own. Both UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol are now two of the biggest British Rowing Universities.

One of the most spectacular courses around, the four minute race takes place over 1.3 kilometres starting at the Cumberland Basin on the waterfront, passing the SS Great Britain, Maritime Heritage Museum and the Amphitheatre.

There are vantage points for spectators to view the race at Princes WharfMuseum Square and The Olive Shed on the Harbourside. There will be refreshments and UWE's highly-acclaimed Centre for Performing Arts will keep the crowds entertained with a range of performances including the Big Band, Sound of Soul Choir, Showstoppers and the Saxophone Ensemble. Prizes will be presented to the winning teams by the Lord Mayor of Bristol.
