UWE Bristol Illustration students spread Christmas cheer with beautifully crafted cards

Issue date: 15 December 2011

A group of entrepreneurial Illustration students from UWE Bristol have produced a series of unique and beautifully crafted Christmas Cards on sale to the public to raise funds for their final year London degree show.

From traditional Christmas scenes using watercolours to digitally produced drawings, collages and photomontage the talented students have drawn on a range of techniques developed throughout their studies to create their designs.

Susanna Clasby is the organiser of the venture and her delicate depiction of snowflakes using collagraphs has become one of the top selling popular designs. She said, “A group of us decided to illustrate some Christmas cards to see if we could sell these to fundraise towards our final year degree show in London. We turned 35 illustrations in to a portfolio and a pdf catalogue, took them to retailers and sent out to friends and family. We were delighted to receive significant orders and had the top selling eight cards printed. These are now on sale in Bristol at The Tourist Information Centre, The Watershed, Bordeaux Quay, Standfords and the RWA. We will also be selling the cards and other handmade crafts at the Picton Street, Christmas Market on Saturday 17 December, 13:00 to 21:00 in Montpelier.”

The other seven cards for sale were designed by students Chris Saltmarsh, Holly Neal, Jamie Jones and Lucy Duckham. Describing her watercolour design, 'Seasons Greetings', Esadora Chang said, “I love paintings with watercolours, especially the soft subtleties in colour changes and its ability to evoke a dream-like quality.”
