UWE awards honorary degree to Miles Templeman

UWE Award ceremony at Bristol Cathedral

The University of the West of England will award the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration to Miles Templeman in recognition of his significant contribution to the regeneration and competitiveness of regional business along with his representation of UK business directors both nationally and internationally.

The Honorary Degree will be conferred at the Awards Ceremony of the Faculty of Business and Law on Friday 22 July 2011 at Bristol Cathedral.

Miles was raised in North London and attended Haberdashers Aske School. He then graduated in Economics from Jesus College, Cambridge. He began his career as a marketing specialist and worked with major consumer brands such as Daz, Ribena and Lucozade. He also held the post of Marketing Director at Levi's jeans.

Miles then moved into general management and became Managing Director of the Whitbread Beer Company. Since leaving Whitbread, Miles has held a number of non-executive directorships and consultancy roles, including with the Royal Mail, Ben Sherman and Accenture. He then went on to become Chief Executive of Bulmers, which was later successfully sold to Scottish & Newcastle. Miles was also Non-Executive Chairman of restaurant chain YO! Sushi between 2003 and 2008.

Miles became Director General of the Institute of Directors in 2004. During this time he increased the Institute's membership, influence and relevance, at a time when the emphasis placed on corporate governance, director standards and the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in business was rapidly growing.

Alongside his role at the Institute of Directors, Miles is Non-Executive Chairman of Shepherd Neame, the Kentish family brewer. He is a Board Member of Young Enterprise, Enterprise Insight, The European Confederation of Directors' Associations (ecoDa), and he is also Senior Non-Executive Director of Melrose PLC, the buy-out specialist.
