UWE plays host to top European boys U18 hockey competition

Issue date: 18 April 2011

UWE vs Brighton

Aspiring young hockey players in Bristol will have the opportunity to watch top class international hockey for free this week, 18 -20 April 2011 at the University of the West of England's, Centre for Sport.

The Centre for Sport is playing host to the U18 Irish and Welsh boys’ squad in a three game series in preparation for this summer’s European competitions.

UWE Head Hockey Coach, Turloch O’Siochain and recently appointed Head Coach of the U18 Irish boys hockey squad arranged the series. He said, “The Irish U18's management team are delighted to be given the opportunity to train and play at the world class facilities here at UWE. These three days promise some good matches against our Welsh counterparts and will also allow us to introduce key tactical concepts to the players. Easter is a critical time during the training cycle in preparation for the summer competition. Coming to UWE allows us to maximise our contact time with the players.”

The matches will take place on Monday 18 April at 15:00, Tuesday 19 April at 14:00 and Wednesday 20 April at 10.00.

Richard Bennett, Sports Performance Manager, said “The Centre for Sport is proud to be hosting this series as part of UWE’s ongoing commitment to promoting elite hockey in the UK.  We look forward to hosting these young players from both countries and hope they enjoy their time in Bristol and consider coming to UWE for their future education. We have some of the finest facilities in the country with our water based astro pitch and regularly stage national competitions as part of our strong partnership with England Hockey.”

A strong partnership between England Hockey and UWE began in 2007 when a consortium between UWE and the Universities of Bristol and Bath was chosen to be a National Performance Centre. The Universities' world class AstroTurf Pitch was a key component in securing this title. England U18 players are encouraged to apply to one of the three universities so that they can meet more regularly for mentoring and training by English Hockey coaches.
