UWE & HMP Bristol present ' CON-Artists' art exhibition

Issue date: 15 March 2011

16 – 18 March 2011
UWE Bower Ashton Campus, Bristol
Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 March,10:00 – 16:00

The University of the West of England's Bower Ashton Campus will be hosting an exhibition of artwork from a class at HMP Bristol, in a collaborative project between HMP Bristol and UWE's Department of Art and Design.

CON-Artists showcases the creative talents of current and ex-prisoners at HMP Bristol, including independently produced cell work as well as work produced in the prison's art class.

The title of the exhibition is a tongue-in-cheek play on the context of the production of the work, and also a reflection on the tentative relationship with the role of artist that the prisoners are exploring through exhibiting their work at the University.

Dr Shawn Sobers, Photography Lecturer at the Department of Art and Design, who initiated the collaboration between UWE and HMP Bristol, said,“I was inspired to contact Horfield Prison about putting on a show at UWE after seeing a national exhibition of offenders' artwork in London last year, which impressed me greatly. The work in the CON-Artists exhibition highlights the power of art and how people with creative impulses find outlets to express themselves, even in adverse situations. It also highlights how creativity can be used for people's voices and feelings to be heard, and also as a source of comfort for the artist.”

Exhibition Opening times: 16-18 March, UWE Bower Ashton Campus, Bristol BS3 2JT, Daily 10:00 - 16:00.
