Dame Janet Trotter is to be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Education in recognition of her distinguished contribution to education and her outstanding leadership of the newly designated University of Gloucestershire.

Janet Trotter was educated at the Technical High School for Girls in Maidstone and later attended Derby Lonsdale College where she to trained as a teacher of religious studies.

Whilst teaching, Janet Trotter added the further qualifications of Bachelor of Divinity (London External) and MA (Education and Theology). In the early 1980s she added an MSc in Business Administration from the Henley Management College, again studying as a part-time mature student.

In 1985 Janet Trotter was appointed to the post of Vice-Principal at St Martin’s College, Lancaster, soon afterwards she became Principal of St Paul and St Mary’s College in Cheltenham. In 1990 Janet Trotter became the founder Director of the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education. She was awarded an OBE in 1991 for services to education.

Janet Trotter served as a Non Executive Director and Chair of the Gloucestershire Health Authority from 1990 until March 1996 and as Chair of the NHS Executive South West from 1996 to 2001. She also sat on the Higher Education Funding Council for England for four years from 1992 and the Teacher Training Agency from 1994 to 1999. In March 1996 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Janus Pannonius University, Pécs, Hungary.

As Director of the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, Janet Trotter has led, with great distinction, its development for over a decade. In that capacity she has promoted values which are admired and shared by the University of the West of England. In 2001 Janet Trotter was awarded a DBE for services to education.

Dame Janet Trotter will be conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Education at the awards ceremony of Bristol Business School on Monday 19 November at 11.30am at Bristol Cathedral.
