UWE awards honorary degree to Mary Prior MBE CStJ jP

UWE The University of the West of England will award the Honorary Degree of Master of Business Administration to Mary Prior MBE CStJ JP in recognition of her outstanding contribution to local public service, and her advisory support to the Bristol Business School and her support for and links with significant stakeholders of the University of the West of England.

The Honorary Degree will be conferred at the Awards Ceremony of Bristol Business School on Monday 23 November at 14.00.

Alice Mary Prior was born in Hambrook, near Bristol, the youngest of four children, and educated at Kingswood Grammar School.

In 1997, Mary Prior retired from her role as Sales and Marketing Director of Alexandra plc, an international supplier of work wear uniforms. She is a partner in a family beef farm and a Director of a small private property company.

Mary Prior is a Trustee of Quartet Community Foundation and past Chairman of Quartet's North Somerset Committee. A former Trustee of St Monica Trust for nine years, she also served as Chairman of the Community Support Fund Committee and Chairman of the Audit Committee. For nine years she served as a lay member of the Lord Chancellor's Bristol Advisory Committee.

A Patron of Bristol Cathedral Trust, Mary Prior was formerly a Trustee and served as Vice-Chairman of the Trust and Chairman of the Executive. She is the Joint Founding Patron of the Music Partnership at Bristol Cathedral, and was awarded the MBE in 1996 for her services to Bristol Cathedral Trust. Mary Prior is President of the Council of St John Ambulance Avon and was invested as Commander of the Order of St John in October this year.

Mary Prior was President of the Dolphin Society in 2007, and is a member of the Society of Merchant Venturers. She has served as: a member of the Advisory Board of the Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England; a Director of Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative; a member of the BBC Radio Bristol Advisory Board; and, a member of the British Olympics Appeal Bristol Committee.

In 1996, Mary Prior was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Bristol, and in 2007 Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Bristol. Since her appointment she has become Patron or President of over thirty different charities and organisations and now chairs the Commission for Bristol and Avon Magistrates.

Mary Prior is married to John and has two children and four grandchildren.
