UWE Music Research goes on International Tour with Pop Star Ariana Grande

The mimu Gloves, a gestural music interaction system based on original research by Dr Tom Mitchell at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) will form an integral part of Ariana Grande's eagerly awaited Honeymoon tour. The 80 stop international tour will begin its UK leg at the O2 Arena in London on the 1 June 2015 before moving on to Wembley, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham. The tour is in support of Grande's second studio album, My Everything, which debuted at no.1 in the Billboard 200 in August 2014. Hundreds of thousands of fans throughout North America, Europe and Asia will be treated to a breathtaking performance in which Grande will use the mimu gloves to manipulate her voice and control complex lighting effects live on stage.

Athena SWAN awards recognise institutions' and departments' commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in higher education and research.

Formula Student goes electric

On Wednesday 25 March, UWE Bristol's Student Racing Team will launch their plans to build and race an electric car at next year's Formula Student Competition, which takes place at Silverstone in July 2016.
During the launch event, UWE Bristol student, Ken Williamson (Lead Design Engineer), will give a talk about the overall design, the innovative technologies used and the rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector. Attendees will also get the opportunity to talk to members of the team about the car itself.

Bloodhound chief engineer to give update on current build status of supersonic car

The event will give those attending a chance to view the latest developments and build status of the supersonic car at the Technical Centre, Avonmouth, Bristol.

Research from UWE to be presented to MPs and ministers at Westminster

Two UWE Bristol researchers have had projects selected for presentation to MPs and ministers at SET for Britain 2015.
Iwona Gajda and Tareq Assaf, both from the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), a major research collaboration between UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol, will present posters outlining their projects on 9 March at SET for Britain 2015.

New research will help robots know their limits

A team of UK researchers is embarking on a collaborative project to ensure that the autonomous robots we build in the future will be safer, making decisions that are ethical and follow legislation on robotics.
Robots that can think and act without human intervention are moving from fiction to reality. The nuclear, aerospace, manufacturing and agricultural industries are starting to develop autonomous systems that can carry out tasks that are either too difficult or too dangerous for humans, while driverless cars are already with us.

3D printed robotic hand wins international prize

Open Bionics, a business based in Bristol Robotics Laboratory's Technology Business Incubator, has been awarded second place and $200,000 at Intel's Make it Wearable Challenge.
Founder Joel Gibbard and colleague Sammy Payne pitched their affordable, 3D printed prosthetic hand to a panel of judges at the final of the global competition held in San Francisco.
