Smart bricks will transform how buildings work

Excellence in engineering and technology will be celebrated at the University of the West of England's (UWE Bristol) award ceremonies on Thursday 21 July 2016. Honorary doctorates in engineering will be awarded to BLOODHOUND Super Sonic Car Chief Engineer, Mark Chapman and Driver, Wing Commander Andy Green and international singer-songwriter, Imogen Heap will receive an honorary doctorate of technology.

Anxiety app designed by UWE experts achieves half a million downloads in over 100 countries

A free self-help app for anxiety (SAM app) conceived and co-designed by experts at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has been downloaded by over 500,000 users from around the globe in more than 100 countries since its launch in July 2013. It has been in the top 100 Health and Fitness Apps in 85 countries and received thousands of positive reviews.

On 15 December 2015, SquareOne Atlantic will be one of 26 crews to take on the 3,000 nautical miles, Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge from La Gomera to Antigua, in support of charities Rape Crisis England & Wales.

Slime mould builds an ancient road network

Scientists from Greece and the UK have used slime moulds to help look back to a period from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD when Roman roads were being built in the Balkans.
A paper entitled 'Slime Mould Imitates Development of Roman Roads in the Balkans' has just been published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. The unique heuristic abilities of the slime mould, Plasmodium polycephalum, inspired the scientists to apply the method for the first time in archaeology.
