UK industry set to miss 2050 net zero without urgent action

The majority of UK industry sectors will miss 2050 Net Zero targets unless there are significant further steps taken by the Government, including acceleration of consumer education and behaviour change. This is according to the Journey to Net Zero report, undertaken by the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and commissioned by insurer Zurich UK.

Drastic drop in NO2 near schools in lockdown shows what is achievable

Levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) fell by just over 40 per cent on main roads in the vicinity of schools in England during the first month of UK's initial lockdown in early 2020, according to a study carried out at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). It highlighted how more people working from home or walking to school can reduce levels of the toxic pollutant, which proves particularly dangerous for children whose lungs are developing.

Poor produce fewer traffic emissions than rich but are most affected – study finds

A study analysing vehicle emissions in relation to different parts of society in England and Wales has found that more affluent households emit the highest levels of traffic-related pollutants but the poor are most exposed to this form of pollution. The findings from this research, carried out by the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)'s Air Quality Management Resource Centre, are set out in an academic paper.

Giant diesel sculpture reveals what city dwellers breathe in

A sculpture designed to make air pollution visible to the public will be on display as part of a UWE Bristol public engagement project.
Artist Luke Jerram's Inhale sculpture depicts a diesel soot particle three million times its actual size. The 3m-high artwork commissioned by the University will make its first public appearance at the Festival of Nature in Bristol on the weekend of June 9-10.

The ClairCity Skylines game from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and Bristol City Council, enables people in the city to shape how they want their city to look in the future. By making decisions in the ClairCity Skylines game, players also provide data that can help authorities solve real world problems, such as air pollution, in the city.

New approach to tackle air pollution

Citizens across the Bristol region are being invited to give their views on the future of work, travel, and leisure in our city.
Researchers from the ClairCity project (Citizen-led Air Pollution Reduction in Cities) at the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol) are working with Bristol City Council to find out what citizens want from their future city. By working together, it's hoped the joint community approach will help to tackle the causes of air pollution.
