• Technology, education, sports and filmmaking students to volunteer in South African townships

  Students from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) are travelling to South Africa this summer to volunteer in township schools in KwaZulu-Natal Province. The trip is part of Project Zulu, a UWE Bristol initiative which has been working in partnership with South African township schools since 2012.

  A blue heritage plaque has been unveiled in Bristol to denote the house where a famous 19^th Century Romantic poet once lived. While researching a new online course about writers in the west country, a Professor of English Literature at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) discovered that former Poet Laureate Robert Southey lived in 87 Kingsdown Parade from 1802-1803.

• UWE Bristol academic wins national wildlife photography award

  Dr Jeanette Sakel, a University of the West of England Linguistics lecturer and National Teaching Fellow, scooped the top prize in the 'Close to Nature' category of this year's British Wildlife Photography Awards, with a photo of tadpoles taken on the University's Frenchay Campus.

  A lecturer at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) has penned an essay about Roald Dahl to coincide with the centenary of the much-loved writer's birth.

  The essay co-written by Dr Ann Alston has been included in a new book called Wales of the Unexpected, which has a cover illustration created by the best-selling author's long-time collaborator Quentin Blake.

  Literary Bristol tells the story of Bristol through its writers. Bristol has been recognised as a thriving port and commercial and industrial centre, yet insufficient attention has been paid to its literary importance. There are over one hundred significant authors, poets and playwrights linked to Bristol, which allow it to take its place as one of the world's great literary centres. Bristol can lay claim to a significant number of literary firsts in poetry, prose and drama. Novels with Bristolian connections include Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, Frankenstein and Dracula.

  UWE Bristol is a major festival sponsor, working with The Bristol Hippodrome and Watershed to host this inaugural festival celebrating how Bristol-born, Archie Leach changed his name and his fortunes to become internationally famous film star Cary Grant, yet never forgot his Bristol roots. • Taking children's literature seriously: UWE author to give keynote address

  Author and critic Dr Catherine Butler will give the keynote address at the Society of Authors Children's Writers and Illustrators Group AGM on Tuesday 19 November.

  Dr Butler is associate professor of English at UWE Bristol, an award-winning critic and the author of numerous novels for children and young adults.

• Thomas Hardy poems still move readers 100 years on

  Poems by Thomas Hardy, written 100 years ago to celebrate the joyful early years of marriage to his wife Emma after she died, will be read and discussed at a special event in the Arnolfini in Bristol on Saturday 8 June.

  The event, organised by the UWE Long Nineteenth-Century Network, in conjunction with the UWE RegionalHistory Centre, will celebrate the Thomas Hardy Poems of 1912-13.

  A major international conference at UWE Bristol is set to explore the relationship between language and identity.

  Topics to be covered include the use of language in the current financial crisis and age-related language issues such as the way children construct an identity in early childhood and older workers' use of language. There will also be locality-based topics ranging from bilingualism in Wales and accent and identity in Stoke-on-Trent, to the colloquial use of the word 'like' by Poles in Ireland.
