Minirigs design competition

Issue date: 04 December 2019

Bristol-based audio technology start-up Minirigs was co-founded by Thomas Tucker, a UWE Bristol alumnus. We're teaming up with Minirigs to create a small batch of limited-edition custom speakers as prizes for our alumni and students and we're looking for a student to help create the perfect design.

The successful designer will get one of the limited-edition Bluetooth Minirig 3 Speakers embossed with their own design to keep. RRP £139+.

How to enter

You'll need to submit a full and final design for a new Minirig 3 custom embossed speaker. The design should celebrate our wonderful city, Bristol.

Download the design template and submit your design to alumni@uwe.ac.uk by Monday 13 January 2020.

The design must be black and white print file only. Designs should be created in a vector based program such as Adobe Illustrator.

Design tips

  • Take a look at some custom embossed Minirig speakers for inspiration.
  • For the best results, the winning design will only be engraved onto black Minirig tubes. The lazer has a white bleaching effect on the tube.
  • The black areas are engraved white and the white areas of your design will show through as the black tube.
  • Avoid gradients, block colour is best. You can use halftone effects for shading.
  • However, try to avoid large sections of block colour as it can sometimes lead to banding.
  • Try to avoid really fine lines. Anything with a stroke width of 0.75 and above is fine.
  • A full wrap design can be tricky to meet up on either ends. It's therefore best create a design which is randomised or fades out towards each end of the design.
  • You can be as creative as you like, but remember that we will be looking for a design that celebrates Bristol, and appeals to our students and alumni.
