UWE Bristol wins Guardian Award for Equity Programme and Bristol Life Award for education

Equity, the UWE Bristol project to equip Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students with the skills and networks to progress their careers, has been named the winner of the Guardian University Award for retention, support and student outcomes at a ceremony in London. Last week also saw the University winning in the Education category at the Bristol Life Awards.
Suzanne Carrie, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity said: "I am delighted to see the hard work, dedication and innovation of the Equity team at UWE Bristol being celebrated through the Guardian Awards."
The project has gone from strength to strength, and has now been expanded for BAME students across the University. Monthly networking events attract 150 people and guest speakers have included David Lammy MP, author Otegha Uwagba and entrepreneur Jessica Huie MBE.
Three other UWE Bristol submissions were shortlisted for the Guardian Awards. Project Zulu and the International Water Security Network were named runners-up in the Internationalisation category and the paramedic major incident day project was named runner-up for the teaching excellence award.
UWE Bristol was also named winner in the Education category at the Bristol Life Awards at a ceremony in Bristol last week.
The Awards celebrate the best of Bristol businesses and are judged by a panel of distinguished business leaders, including Bristol's Lord-Lieutenant Peaches Golding OBE, Head of BBC South West Stephanie Marshall, Co-founder of Engine Shed Nick Sturge and Director of the Royal West of England Academy Alison Bevan.
The judges said: "Now top-ten ranked for student satisfaction, the region's highly active and largest university contributes greatly to the city beyond its undoubted academic strength."
UWE Bristol also made Bristol Life's shortlist for the Civic Award which was won by The Bristol Wing (YMCA).
