LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this module the successful student will be able to:

• use a rich variety of vocabulary and idiomatic items in an appropriate way to express a wide range of feelings, ideas and opinions

• exploit a knowledge of a wide range of aspects of the grammar of English

• demonstrate a range of listening skills at advanced level

• demonstrate an ability to speak accurately, interestingly and appropriately in a wide and challenging range of academic, social and workplace situations

• write in a variety of forms including transactional letters, reports, stories, instructions, newspaper reviews, articles, and so on with a firm sense of audience and purpose and an understanding of the issues of formality

• write accurately and appropriately texts which exploit the language of cause and effect, sequence, location, process, development and classification

• read with good understanding a range of texts including articles, text and reference books, brochures, guides, messages, reports, advertisements and so on.

This module also prepares students to sit the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English, should they wish to take it.

SYLLABUS OUTLINE:

• a range of contemporary and stimulating topics designed to develop reading and listening skills at a level appropriate to the Cambridge ESOL Advanced Certificate

• the more advanced elements of the grammar of the English language presented in a communicative way

• a range of appropriate, relevant and advanced vocabulary and idiomatic items presented in authentic settings

• a series of writing tasks developing the skills of writing with a more sophisticated sense of audience and purpose at advanced level

• a range of opportunities for students to express opinions, debate ideas, solve problems, describe pictures and events, account for feelings and ideas, and so on.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS:

This module will be delivered through a series of communicative language lessons with an emphasis appropriate to the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English Examination and including some of the following:

• simulation and role play

• free discussion in groups, pairs and whole of class

• debates

• mini-lectures

• explanation and practice of grammatical rules and other linguistic features

• reading comprehension

• listening comprehension

• audio and video laboratory work

• case study work

• group and pair work

• directed self-study
