On successful completion of this module students will demonstrate:

• Complex understanding of the formal strategies and techniques available to them as filmmakers and of the critical and cultural contexts of their practice (assessed through all elements of Component A);

• Effective selection and application of these formal strategies and techniques to their project (assessed through all elements of Component A);

• An ability to reflect critically upon creative practices, forms and conventions, including self-reflection and critical evaluation of the work produced on the module (all elements of Component A);

• An ability to identify, engage with, and thoughtfully respond to appropriate audiences for their work (assessed through Component A, element 3)

• Critical awareness of short film distribution and exhibition strategies, including involvement with the organisation of the end of year show (assessed through Component A, elements 2 and 3);

• A high degree of autonomy and professionalism, demonstrating the ability to work independently (both individually and as part of a team), to motivate themselves and to produce work to deadlines (assessed through Component A, elements 1 and 2).

Syllabus outline:

The module develops the critical practice model experienced on Film Forms to the next level, emphasising self-initiated, autonomous projects which critically interrogate film form and meaning. The content and form of projects will be developed in consultation with staff, but could include, e.g., narrative drama, documentary, experimental practices. In addition, the module raises issues around short film distribution and exhibition.

Teaching and learning methods:

Students are expected to work autonomously, learning through independent and collaborative work. They are supported through workshops and tutorials. Workshops are used for general communication about the module, peer-to-peer critique of work in progress and specialist technical instruction; they also provide support for team building and developing crew roles. Tutorials provide more individualised support and feedback.,

Reading Strategy

Since this module depends upon independent project work, the module has no set readings. Students are, however, expected to develop their own reading and research, based on the needs of their individual projects. Module staff will recommend readings to students, according to their individual needs. A range of relevant texts are available in the library; books in high demand will be put in the Short Loan Collection.
