Learning outcomes:

On completion of the module students are expected to demonstrate:

    1. A critical understanding of the different feminisms and debates within feminism. (Component A )

    2. An in-depth appreciation of the relevance of feminist thinking and scholarship in sociology and criminology. (Component A)

    3. A detailed critical understanding of feminist approaches to research and production of knowledge. (Component A)

    4. The ability to apply and synthesise feminist ideas and methods to a range of topics. (Component A)

    5. Critical and reflective learning and writing skills. (Component A )

Syllabus outline:

The syllabus will vary but will include a range of topics from this list:

    • Anorexia

    • Biology of sex and gender

    • Contemporary feminist activism

    • ‘Chavettes’ Class and gender

    • Cosmetic surgery

    • Drag kings

    • Domestic violence

    • Excessive bodies

    • Fashion

    • Intersex

    • Rape

    • Selling sex

    • Sexual citizenship

    • Sexual Reassignment surgery

    • Teenage pregnancy

    • Prison – industrial complex

    • Patriarchy and critical perspectives

    • Women soldiers

Teaching and learning methods:

This module will be based around two hour weekly workshops. The Reflective Journal is an innovative assessment method which will require students to reflect on their learning by selecting five seminar topics and writing about each of them. They will be expected to draw on their reading, the lecture and seminar materials and relate these to their own life experience.

Reading Strategy:

The key readings for each seminar will be provided in either the form of a reading pack, a web-link to a relevant resource from the module's website on UWE Blackboard, or chapter in a book that is recommended for purchase. In order to facilitate further reading and research, the handbook will contain details of books, journals and websites relevant to the topics covered by this course.
