By the end of the module, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate the ability to design and develop an independent research project (Assessment component A, Element 1 and 2)

• Demonstrate a coherent and detailed critical knowledge about a chosen field of study, through research and argument (Assessment component A, Element 2)

• Select, justify, apply and interpret appropriate research methods (Assessment Component A, element 2)

• Analyse their object of study in relation to relevant critical and theoretical debates in Film Studies (Assessment component A, element 1 and 2)

• Accurately present research in an appropriate academic format (Assessment component A, element 2)

• Demonstrate time-management skills relevant to sustained independent work (Assessment component A, element 1)

Teaching and learning methods:

A variety of methods will be used

• Independent study.

• Introductory workshops providing students with support in developing, designing and implementing research projects.

• Individual supervision tutorials, supporting on-going research, critical reading and writing.

• Oral and written feedback from supervisor on the proposal and drafts written in advance of the final version.

Reading Strategy

The nature of the module demands that students develop independent information literacy skills. There are no set or recommended readings, but supervisors will offer advice on finding relevant sources, where appropriate. The module includes skills training in using electronic databases and effective research.
