Venue: Online (MS Teams)
Time: 09:30 - 13:30

The accounting discipline and profession has experienced significant changes in the recent times. These changes have affected the nature and scope of accounting tasks and responsibilities within organisations. Similarly, increasing adoption of technology such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data and robotic process automation, which handle repetitive and learnable accounting functions in organisations have also highlighted the dynamics of the accounting profession and the challenge to maintain professional legitimacy and relevance. Organisational demands on accounting professionals are changing rapidly, yet academic and professional curricula are not sufficiently dynamic in responding to these changes. Students are reluctant to shift their learning expectations to accommodate the requirements of the future work.

The future corporate environment requires accounting professionals that can demonstrate excellent technical abilities underpinned by outstanding personal, social and technological skills. These requirements have implications for the academic curriculum and pedagogy. We need to redefine the purpose of the accounting curriculum and how best to deliver them to make them relevant for the future. Doing this requires a collaborative and joined up approach that involves the major stakeholders. This workshop, organised by the Governance and Accountability Research Group of UWE Bristol, provides the first step in a series of activities to open up the opportunities for dialogue on the future of accounting education.

The workshop will feature speakers from employers including leading accounting firms, professional bodies: ICAEW and ACCA and contributions from accounting academics in UK HEIs.
