BBC 6 Music Bristol Social Hackathon - The Power of Music in Bringing People Together

This event has now passed.

Date: 10 February - 12 February 2016
Venue: at-Bristol, Bristol
Time: 13:00

Bring people together with music

Bristol is a city of great inequality – with some of the wealthiest housing areas in the UK sitting next to some of the poorest. The city's diversity and history have both fuelled its musical and artistic creativity, but they also leave a legacy of inequality of opportunity.

Part of the BBC 6 Music Festival and hosted by UWE Bristol, University of Bristol, this event spans three days and gives you the opportunity to develop products or social enterprise ideas which use music to bring people together and solve issues facing young people in Bristol.

Pitch your project and win prizes

The 'Hack' over several days will bring together multi-disciplinary teams to generate business and social project proposals - alongside coding based product ideas.

On the final day project teams will pitch their ideas to judges from a range of partners, and the best projects will be awarded a prize!

Day 1 Wednesday 10 February 13:00 - 17:00

You will meet other students and form teams over the course of an afternoon. The brief will be set and you'll be given a toolkit to get you started.

Day 2 Thursday 11 February free day

Development Day - there will be an open drop in session from 10:00 - 17:00 where you can gather at any point to develop and hone your ideas. Teams will work independently and start to develop their plans using toolkits given out on day one.

Please note: You will not need to be physically present for this duration, but mentors will be available and you will be expected to coordinate with your team.

Day 3 Friday 12 February 16:00 - 19:00

Judging and awards day - you will spend this day developing your video pitch and can access help at any point during the day. Pitching will start at 16:00 with question and answers, a member of your team must be present, and the winners of the best student category will be announced.

Judges will be from BBC, UWE, UoB (University of Bristol) and music tech businesses.

Outcomes:

  • The best student projects will be awarded cash prizes from the joint universities' funds.
  • Work with industry to develop your tech and business ideas.
  • The winning and best student projects will get BBC on air radio coverage.
  • Display pitch videos in Colston Hall as part of the BBC 6 Music Festival.
