Off-road cycling enthusiast, Scott Cornish, Postgraduate Administrator in the Faculty of Humanities Languages and Social Sciences at the University of the West of England will race in the fourth 'Cape Epic' in South Africa this April to raise money for CLIC. Scott will team up with fellow off-roader Matt Carr from the Mud Dock Cycleworks in Bristol.
Scott hopes to raise £6000 in this professional race of 500 teams of two riders. Scott enthuses, “This is the first time that I have taken part in a multi day event. It is also the first time that I have been to South Africa. The course is 915 kilometres stretching from Knynsa in the east to Cape Town. We will take eight days travelling through game reserves, private land and rolling hills. The course is marked out along dirt tracks and our luggage is ferried between set up camps at the end of each day. Lesley Woolf, UWE's resident physiotherapist at the Recreation centre is helping me out with all my aches!
“I have done a lot of training for this and I'm notching up about 50 to 60 kilometres every day by cycling to work and going out every evening. At the weekend I go out on the numerous local trails and also head out to Wales. I was inspired to help raise money for CLIC after taking part in the CLIC 24hour mountain bike event in the Mendips last year where the organisers achieved a staggering result by raising £35,000 for the charity. I think this charity is fantastic because it helps so many children and families who have to cope with the trauma brought about by childhood cancer. Raising money for CLIC will make all the effort very worth while”.
