Help make Bristol's longest painting

Issue date: 26 January 2006

Bridge drawing The University of the West of England and the Royal West of England Academy are calling on artists of all ages to help create the longest bridge in Bristol as part of the Brunel 200 celebrations. Get involved by making a drawing, collage, print or painting and stamp your mark on this exciting artwork that will grace the walls of the RWA during the 'Bridge' exhibition.

Project co-ordinator Carinna Parraman from UWE said, “We want as many people as possible to get involved by drawing just one section of a bridge that will stretch around all the galleries in the RWA. We will supply templates and these will be joined together to create the longest bridge in Bristol. We might even break the world record for the longest painting or the painting by the most artists!

“The bridge will be exhibited at the RWA galleries from 2 - 29 April 2006 at the 'Bridge' exhibition which is a mixed show of work by staff, students and invited artists from UWE exploring the idea of “bridge”. Each artwork needs to include two upright pillars and a bridge; you can include traffic and pedestrians and use your imagination to create any style of pillar or bridge, the more inventive the better! Simply download a template from our web pages or collect one from the RWA or UWE. To be included in the opening exhibition the deadline for submissions is 25 March.”

The continual bridge will be made by as many people as possible of all ages and abilities. The idea is based on the game of consequences and has already been used in a previous exhibition by UWE artists when each person was given a piece of coastline to produce 'The Consequential Coastline' an artists' collaborative book project in 1996.

Sections of the bridge can be made either at home or in the RWA gallery which when joined to the next picture, will become a continuous bridge. The drawings, paintings or collages will be hung along the bottom of the gallery wall, and depending on the amount of pictures, will continue around the RWA galleries and possibly out of the building.

The longest painting in the world measures 2978.4 meters and the world record for the picture painted by the most painters is 25,297 – will Bristol be able to compete with these figures?
