Bristol Business School and the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of the West of England (UWE), have announced a unique partnership with a group of European business schools to enhance the leadership development of public service managers and practitioners.

The partnership will initially involve a student exchange between UWE and Copenhagen Business School (CBS), with Bristol students on the MSc programme in Leadership and Organisation of Public Services (LOPS) participating in an International Summer School. The Summer School brings together organisational leaders from the public sector and non-profit organisations to discuss key issues and challenges in public management across Europe.

Students on CBS’s Masters in Public Administration (MPA) programme will also attend the UWE course and participate in course electives on the LOPS programme.

Says Mike Broussine, one of the Programme Directors for LOPS: “We now have the opportunity to work with a range of leading European higher education institutions that are recognised leaders in the field of public management education.

“We are delighted to be able to offer our public service students a unique learning opportunity in an international setting offered by CBS and partner organisations through the annual Summer School and their MPA programmes. The link up will enable our students to discover new perspectives with respect to public service leadership and management and to share experiences with their European colleagues. Ultimately it will increase their employability within a European public service market.”

Yusuf Ahmad, also a Programme Director for LOPS, adds: “The partnership will provide us with opportunities for learning how other institutions address a range of key issues of common concern in the field of public service leadership and management. From this growing experience we will be able to offer a curriculum that both addresses the real challenges faced by managers in local and central government, health, justice and voluntary sectors. It will enable our students to gain European and global perspectives in their work.

“In addition the partnership opens up great possibilities for staff and student research with the public services in Europe.”

LOPS students at Bristol UWE will have the opportunity to attend the CBS-hosted International Summer School in Cracow, Poland in August. More than 70 participants, including faculty and public management students from a number of business schools in Europe will be attending the event which will be focusing on the challenge of change presented by new public management and public governance.

Under the partnership agreement, the student exchange also extends to other events at the respective Schools. Copenhagen Business School will help Bristol students to find accommodation during all their exchange visits and vice versa.

Upon return from the Summer School, students will have to make a written report where they consider and reflect upon how they can apply what they have learnt to their own organisations.
