UWE reaches semi final at Henley

Issue date: 05 July 2005

The University of the West of England Rowing Club has continued its astonishing run of successes this year by making it to the finals of Henley Royal Regatta in the Temple Challenge Cup.

For the first time ever two UWE men’s eights qualified for the Regatta and both competed in the Temple Cup. The “B” boat lost to Trinity College, Hartford, USA in the first round but the “A” crew was only narrowly defeated on the fourth day, in the semi finals, by the US giants, Yale University. In an exciting final the Trinity boat beat Yale by three lengths in the fastest time of the week in the Temple.

To get to the semi-finals UWE “A” had a convincing wins against London, Manchester and Colby College, USA.

The UWE Boat Club goes from strength to strength and was one of only a handful of universities qualifying with two crews at Henley, not forgetting their recent victory over the University of Bristol in the varsity boat race.

One of UWE’s graduates Peter Reed is also now in the GB Coxless four and has been selected for the Olympics in Bejing in 2008. The GB four beat Canada in the final of the Stewards Cup at Henley.

The UWE Boat Club’s incredible season will be completed when the UWE Women’s Quad Four represent British Universities in the European Universities Championships in Cardiff on 22-24 July 2005.
