UWE main sponsor of St Paul’s Carnival for second year

The University of the West of England has announced that it will be lead sponsor of St Paul’s Carnival for the second year running

UWE’s Vice-Chancellor, Alfred Morris, CBE, said “This sponsorship builds on a very successful partnership last year. The promotion of racial equality and the widening of access to higher education is central to Bristol UWE’s mission. UWE has a special commitment to Bristol’s inner city communities as is demonstrated in its strong association with the City Academy in St George and ongoing student mentoring schemes that include several inner city community schools.

The St Paul’s Carnival Committee welcomes the partnership with UWE and hope that it encourages and ensures that more young people from the community will undertake further and higher education.

Bristol UWE will make a substantial financial contribution and play an active role in the carnival fun by providing transport on its distinctive UWE buses and helping sell carnival T shirts and programmes.

“UWE is also keen to support the City’s attempt to address Bristol’s poor record of participation by state school pupils in higher education. As part of its support for the City’s attempts to address this problem, Bristol UWE has launched the country’s fourth largest bursary scheme and is directly involved with schools in the inner-city areas of Bristol in seeking to break this cycle of pupils traditionally not going onto Higher Education, ” said Dr Sheila Newby, who leads Bristol UWE’s Widening Participation strategy.

TV personality Sherrie Eugene is a festival stalwart who currently sits on UWE’s Board of Governors. Sherrie said, “I think it is important to maintain old links and establish new links with the community. I am so pleased that UWE has decided to support this fantastic community event once again. I know that this will be appreciated by the Carnival Committee who work so hard to put on this event each year.”

Sue Fox, Bristol UWE’s Operations Manager said, “On the Festival day staff and students from UWE will join the procession and once again they will be giving out special edition festival whistles – don’t miss out on your chance to get one – look out for the UWE bus and the City Academy Steel Band!”

St Paul Carnival is on Saturday 2 July 2005

UWE has the largest intake of students in the South-West from under-represented groups in higher education, with some 1,900 students from non-white backgrounds. The university is very keen to encourage more enrolments from inner city communities especially those who come from families with no history of Higher Education experience.
