UWE volunteers create mural with Withywood children

Student volunteers from the University of the West of England will spend a day helping local Withywood children paint a mural at the New Fulford Family Centre on Saturday 26 February. This event is taking place during National Student Volunteering Week.

The day has been organised, in collaboration with Barnardo’s who manage the Centre, by Ellie Roads for UWE’s Community Volunteer Programme run by the Centre for Student Affairs. Ellie said, “We contact community organisations all over the region offering up the services of student volunteers and this project appealed because the students get to have a fun day with local children creating a colourful mural that will be enjoyed by all.”

Local firm Ashcroft Services has donated all of the paint. John Skinner, Ashcroft’s Manager, said, “We are delighted to get involved. The Family Centre needed brightening up and we are happy to be able to help out.”

UWE’s Community Volunteer Programme actively encourages students to take part in volunteering projects. Throughout the year students can choose to take placements with voluntary organisations and charities, get involved in Community Action Days or set up their own projects. Past activities have included organising a children’s Christmas party, redecorating a drop-in Centre for people with learning difficulties and renovating a wildlife garden.
