ISSUE DATE: 29/07/03

From August 2003 a new student service entitled ResNet (UWE Residential Network) will be available to students in university managed accommodation at the University of the West of England.

ResNet is a new UWE residential network service providing computer connections to some of UWE’s Halls of Residence connecting student rooms to the UWE network and the internet. This will enable students to access to their UWE e-mail account, the UWE web pages and the internet, the web-based UWE resources such as the library and personal file space on the UWE file store.

Neil Sapsworth, UWE Accommodation Manager explains, “The project entailed building work in residences to create communications rooms, cabling to individual rooms and installation of network equipment like switches and routers. Network points totalling 2,500 had to be installed in each of the 13 student accommodation locations. Thorough testing is being undertaken and we have worked with a number of local firms to link communications back to the Frenchay Campus

“The ResNet Service is included in student rents, although rents have risen slightly to cover the annual cost of the scheme. IT Services will be entering into a service level with UWE Student Union covering service standards. The Students Union has been very supportive of the project.

“Students will need to own their own computer, monitor, network card, keyboard and mouse. IT Services will provide network connectivity and a free network lead when students first move in. Students will also be able to contact UWE suppliers to benefit from education prices for equipment if they wish to do so.”

ResNet will be available in the following accommodations:

The Hollies, Favell House, 33 Colston Street, 26 Park Street, Fitzhardinge House, Market Gate, Glenside Campus, Waverley House, Drake House, Nelson House, Transom House, The Rackhay and St Matthias Campus.
