On 10 May, 2003 the Bristol Harbourside will once again be filled with the sounds of splashing oars and cheers of the crowds as the ninth annual Bristol Boat Race takes place. Starting at 11.00am, it will go on until approximately 4.30pm with the main University of the West of England versus University of Bristol races beginning at 1.45pm.

The Varsity Boat Race Trophy promises to be the most hotly contested for many years, with both clubs at the peak of their fitness. The UWE Boat Club is the favourite this year according to previous Head of the River Races and will be hoping to reverse previous ‘Boat race’ results. A record crowd is expected to pack the Harbourside for what is one of the great sporting occasions of the year for University students.

One of the other main attractions this year is ex-UWE student and past UWE Boat Club President, Richard Pullan, who will be rowing in the alumni team. Richard plans to take part in the Atlantic Challenge 2003 in October, and will be bringing his “Atlantic” boat to the Bristol Harbourside.

There will also be a ‘Best In the West’ competition, in which teams from Bath, Cardiff and Exeter Universities, will be looking to prove themselves against the power of UWE and University of Bristol.
