Video: UWE Bristol Clearing advice film

An animated Clearing advice video, produced by a UWE Bristol animation alumnus, and voiced by Hannah Regean, a current Biomedical Science student who went through the process, is just one of the many sources of information and advice the University has created, in order to make Clearing as simple and painless as possible for prospective students.

Hannah says, “I would recommend studying at UWE Bristol 110%, it is such a helpful environment and it can help you achieve anything.”

A level results day - 18 August 2016 - and the Clearing period that follows provides an opportunity for many students to find the educational pathway that is right for them, in order to achieve their aspirations. For a number of students this is also a time to re-think their original choices and find a university that can truly fulfil their ambitions.

UWE Bristol has consistently performed above the national average in regards to the employment of its graduates 6 months after graduation, with HESA figures showing 96% of last year's UWE Bristol graduates are in employment or further study, with 78% in professional roles, compared to the UK market averages of 94% and 71%, respectively.

Kerry Fey, Head of Admissions at UWE Bristol, says, “When making their choice, more and more students are questioning the type of university that is going to help them achieve their ambitions by looking at graduate employment opportunities and what support facilities universities offer.

“We find that students who come to us via Clearing are just as successful as those who don't, and for some students there is an extra incentive to achieve. UWE offers guidance for those students making these choices and it is really important that students don't just take the first course offered, but take time to ensure that the course and the university they choose is right for them and will help them achieve their ambitions.”

This year UWE Bristol is celebrating its highest levels of student satisfaction. Results from the National Student Survey (NSS) released 10 August 2016; show 87% of final year undergraduates at UWE Bristol indicated they were happy with the quality of their course, a rise of two percentage points on 2015, and a second consecutive yearly increase. The national average has remained at 86% for the past four years.

Professor Jane Harrington, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol, said, “We are really delighted that our NSS results are so positive and demonstrate that the students recognise the excellence of the programmes at UWE Bristol.

“This is the second year where we have seen improvements in our NSS outcome, placing us above the sector average.”

The UWE Bristol student village is also set to expand, with the completion of more student 'Townhouses', adding a further 550 bedrooms to the Wallscourt Park residences – a number of which will be available for students coming to the University via Clearing.

Andrew Carter, Head of Recruitment and Outreach at UWE Bristol, says, “We understand how daunting the prospect of finding accommodation in Clearing can be for both applicants and parents. Please do not worry; there are rooms still available across the entire range of accommodation at UWE Bristol. We will be running accommodation events with a team of experts on hand to offer support and guidance for applicants coming to the University through Clearing.”

What our students have to say about their experiences of Clearing and studying at UWE Bristol:

Tom Underhill completed the BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science course at UWE Bristol after applying through Clearing. He is now studying for his Master's degree in Biomedical Science at the University and is considering embarking on a PhD once completed.

Tom says, “I was scared when I didn't get my original choice as I had no idea about Clearing, but UWE was great. The staff really helped me through the application process, which was really appreciated at a time when I was very stressed.”

Ellie is finishing her BA(Hons) English course at UWE Bristol after applying through Clearing, and is going to continue her studies with a Master's degree in September 2016.

“I felt a bit demoralised when I entered the Clearing process but I would say to anyone going through it not to panic because in the end it has been a fabulous experience. I got to study in Bristol which is an amazing city.”

“The passion that tutors have for their subject is infectious and really makes the course what it is. UWE Bristol is wonderfully diverse and there are lots going on so I would undoubtedly recommend this University.”

Rebecca Lock is studying the BSc(Hons) Adult Nursing course after successfully applying to UWE Bristol through Clearing.

Rebecca says, “I knew other options were still available for me, so I went through Clearing to find out exactly what they were. I chose UWE Bristol because it's a well-known university and has a good reputation in regards to my course.

“I would recommend UWE Bristol to anyone who wants to go to a university. It's full of opportunities, new experiences and amazing staff.”

Stephen Johnson applied through Clearing to study the BA(Hons) Journalism course at UWE Bristol, and he is currently in his first year.

Stephen says, “I was initially a bit nervous about applying through Clearing as I didn't know much about the process but UWE Bristol helped me a lot.”

"When I rang up the advisers put me through to someone from the Faculty straight away. This gave me a clear idea of the course, as well as what it would mean for me as a mature student. It was very personal. They talked about what the University could do for me and I found that very useful.”

"The course itself is so much fun. I have been to Westminster and the House of Lords and have been reporting from court. I have even interviewed the Mayor of Bristol. The tutors are very experienced and qualified in regards to the industry.”

UWE Bristol phone lines will be open from 07.00 on A-level results day - Thursday 18 August 2016 - to give advice. Potential students can call +44(0)117 9111663 as soon as they get their exam results. Those who already have their exam results can apply now.
