UWE Bristol gets UK Quality Mark and recognition for good practice

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has confirmed the quality and standards of provision at UWE Bristol following its review in October 2015.

A team of QAA reviewers visited UWE Bristol (the University of the West of England) and judged that its academic standards, the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities, and the quality of information about its learning opportunities all meet UK expectations.

The review highlighted “the breadth and strength of partnerships and the embedding of employability skills across the University's activities.”

Recent figures show that the University had 99.1% of UWE graduates in employment or further study 3 ½ years after graduation, compared to the national average of 97%.

The QAA review cited a number of examples of good practice that included UWE's “commitment to the widening participation and outreach agenda regionally, which provides opportunities to students from under-represented groups” and “ the expansion of the Peer Assisted Learning initiative in supporting students' academic potential and development.”

UWE Bristol has the largest paid peer assisted learning scheme in the country with 1,200 trained students supporting other students. This is a highly successful scheme that has improved student success rates by 10% and supported those from non-traditional HE backgrounds.

The University is also one of the top spending HE institutions on widening participation, investing £15.8 million in improving participation in higher education. This funding is used to widen access and improve success among students from low income and other under-represented groups.

Professor Jane Harrington, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UWE Bristol, said: “We are all delighted with the positive outcome and the areas that were specifically highlighted as best practice. These include UWE Bristol's student support, our excellent engagement with employers and partners, and the active ways in which we ensure that students from all backgrounds are supported in their learning and achieve excellent employment outcomes. What was especially pleasing about these being confirmed is that they are all areas that we would choose to highlight ourselves as part of our values and focus – so it is great to see them recognised by an independent external agency.”

QAA's Higher Education Reviews are carried out by experts from other universities and colleges. Every review team includes a student reviewer, highlighting QAA's commitment that students should be partners in the quality assurance of their education.

This review means UWE Bristol can display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the University meets national requirements for standards and quality.
