'A tale of two cities Bristol and Belfast past, present and future, is the theme of the next lecture in the Bristol Distinguished Address Series, delivered by The Rt Hon Sir Richard Needham, The Earl of Kilmorey, at UWE Bristol's Exhibition and Conference Centre, on Thursday 12 November 2015.

The Rt Hon Sir Richard Needham, The Earl of Kilmorey, will present a tale of two of the greatest and most successful industrial ports of the Empire, Bristol and Belfast: their centres recently reinvigorated after years of long term decline, surrounded by prosperous suburbs, interspersed with large areas of deprivation and morbidity.

Sir Richard will discuss the arrival of new technologies, particularly SMART solutions and the Internet of Things and how they have the opportunities to re-inhabit, redevelop and reconnect the centres, the suburbs and beyond. Both cities have famous and similar attractions. The SS Great Britain and Brunel in Bristol, the Titanic and Harland & Wolff in Belfast. Their glorious pasts are signposts to their future. They have the potential to become world class cities of the 21st century.

Sir Richard asks the question 'do they have the ambition, the political structure and the leadership to promote, organise and develop their true potentials?'

An audience of over 200 is expected including over 100 leaders from the business community, as well as local government leaders, UWE Bristol academics and alumni.

The Bristol Distinguished Address Series provides a unique opportunity to hear about the challenges, issues and decisions being made at the highest level of strategic leadership. The series is delivered by the Bristol Business School in partnership with ACCA,Bristol City Council,Bristol Junior Chamber,Bristol Post,Business West,CBI,CMI,FSB,IoD,ICAEW and the West of England LEP.
