Volunteers at the Big Beach Clean

For the eighth year running, student volunteers from UWE Bristol are joining forces with the Marine Conservation Society on Saturday 30 May 2015 to spring clean Sand Bay, near Weston-super-Mare.

As part of the Bristol Green Capital: Student Capital project, UWE Volunteering are engaging students in tidying the beach at Sand Bay to raise awareness about the impact of litter on our coast line and the broader environment.

Around 40 students will spend the day clearing litter and surveying the beach, with a prize for the most litter collected and the strangest item found!

Jenny Idle from UWE Volunteering, said, “The Beach Clean is always a popular event for students to get involved in and we're pleased this year to have around 40 students taking time out to help make a difference to our local coastline. Students really value getting out in the fresh air with their friends and seeing the massive impact they can have in only one day of litter picking on the beach. It also helps students to be more aware of the affect littering has on the environment and what they can do to take action.”

Dr Sue Kinsey from the Marine Conservation Society, said, “We're incredibly grateful for the support of the students. Not only are they cleaning up the beach, they are surveying the litter they find as part of our national Beachwatch programme. This vital information allows us to identify the most common litter items on our beaches, so we can target the sources through public awareness and government lobbying to stop it getting there in the first place. The beach clean also helps us raise awareness amongst the public in the hope that people will change habits and think before they throw away rubbish.”

Describing previous Beach Clean events, UWE Student Volunteer, Xin Ying Cheng said, “It was the best 'rubbish' day in my life! It was meaningful and it felt great to contribute a little bit to the protection of sea life.”
